The Social Media Bible by Lon Safko and David Brake

Is This Book for You?

Is Blogging REALLY an Effective Marketing Tool?

Yes!

Blogging is an amazing effective marketing tool because it allows you to publish your company's solutions, news and opinions about your industry. It also allows you to start a conversation with your audience, answer their questions and gain from their insights. Blogs can be good for Search Engine Optimization too! (search engines love to see that a site has good, fresh, keyword rich, properly tagged content…but you can learn more about that in the book!)

And No.

Keep in mind, the power of a blog can be misused. Repeat after me:

  • I will not use it to just push press releases or my company news with the comments turned off.
  • I will not ignore it for weeks at a time.
  • I will not delete negative comments or ignore controversial issues.
  • I will not use it entirely for Search Engine Optimization and promise to have a personality.

A blog is a chance to get personal with your customers and potential customers – you should use it the same as if you were talking to them face-to-face.

“Tweet, Wiki, Mashup?” Can I get a translation?

Simple terms in Social Media may seem nonsensical in real life, especially when thrown about at high speed in a meeting. Don't worry about keeping up with the conversation again, just reach for The Social Media Bible. With an in-depth history of all things Social Media you'll have a great reference tool for yourself, your staff or even your clients.

  • Tweet - a micro-blog post of a 140 characters or less using the social media platform, Twitter. You may not think a microblog post is very effective but Twitter moves news and information faster than most news services.
  • Wiki - is a web page or a set of web pages that can be contributed to or modified by anyone who has access. Wiki is also a Hawaiian word for "fast". Wikipedia, an open-source encyclopedia, uses Wiki's and crowdsourced information to become one of the largest and most referenced websites on the internet.
  • Mashup - combines data from one or more sources into a single integrated web application. A good example of a Mashup is Flickrvision which combines the API of Flickr and Google Maps. By watching Flickrvision, you can see where new photos are being added to Flickr from around the world.

Linkedin is not an option for your business - it's mandoratory.

According to Krista Canfield from LinkedIn, this social media platform was intended to help business people say in touch with their business contacts as they move from position to position but it has bloomed into a true social media platform, it became a resource where you can ask (and answer) questions, join groups, email and get recommendations from your co-workers and business associates. Think about it this way: right now Linkedin has over 36 million members and you have the opportunity to connect to all of them.

  • Connect with current and potential partners and customers
  • Stay in touch with your contacts as they move along their career path
  • Recruit the right talent for your business
  • Become an expert in your field

What's Inside

The business community wanted something much more comprehensive than just another vertical business book. When we asked the business community what they wanted – they told us "a resource that explains all of this stuff that we've been hearing about…" "yeah, what are people talking about with their blogs and tweets anyway?" They just wanted to be part of the conversation, and have someone explain it in their terms.

Thus the Social Media Bible was conceived.

Obviously with a topic as constantly moving as social media, no single person could be the expert on it all. (Not to mention that we couldn't really claim to be a definitive resource on social media if we didn't include the community on this one, right?)

We determined the best way to be "the definitive voice" is to let others speak. We spent the better part of a year researching, interviewing, connecting and having conversations with tens of thousands of experts (Lon swears it's hundreds). Experts from ALL aspects of the movement. Then we began the task of aggregrating and editing thousands of blog posts, vlogs, podcasts, wikis, emails, interviews, presentations, and more – all with permission of course – and all from real life residents of this realm we call social media.

Topics such as:

PART ONE - The Tools

Answering all those questions that kept you on the sideline of the conversation. (Not anymore!)

  • What's a blog, a vlog, a podcast?
  • What is a "trusted network" and "wisdom of the crowds"?
  • What are LinkedIn, MySpace, Flickr, and YouTube?

PART TWO - The Players

Provides background and business information on the top names in Social Media today.

  • Where do I post a video, or a podcast?
  • What's the most used photo-sharing site?
  • Which is the best blogging platform for me?

PART THREE - The Insights

Ties it all together, giving you real world examples and insights from industry leaders.

  • How do I use social media in my business?
  • Can I make money using social media?
  • Will this change the way I do business?
